I had a dream the other night…

I had a dream the other night.

In my dream I was talking to a woman I’ll call Julia about how to handle her thoughts about herself. I realized that Julia was quite good at handling her thoughts about other people. She was powerless, however, when it came to thoughts about herself. Whatever Julia thought about herself she automatically believed without even a question. Most of what Julia thought about herself was not very pleasant or flattering, so, quite naturally, Julia felt miserable much of the time.

I turned to talk to a senior colleague about Julia’s situation. As we talked, I realized something profound- Julia doesn’t realize she is in control! She does not realize that she is in control of how she handles her thoughts. That makes her an unconscious passive victim of her own mind…

My dream ended there.
