About Omega 3 supplements
This post is specifically a reference for my clients use and is not a comprehensive article on Omega 3 supplements. The recommendations come from Stephen S. Ilardi, PhD, and Barry Sears, MD.About Omega 3 Supplements
The bottom line- for depression or mood improvement, take 1-2 grams (1000-2000 mg) of EPA daily. For weight control or chronic illnesses, take 2-5 grams of EPA daily.
All fish oils are not created equal. Get one that is molecularly distilled. Any fish oil that is molecularly distilled and has enough EPA is a good choice.
You will have to read the label. Make sure you take enough capsules to get at least 1000 mg of EPA.
Down below I have posted the label info from a brand of fish oil called called NSI Mega EFA® Omega-3 EPA & DHA. It is high quality fish oil that is relatively inexpensive. It is available online at Vitacost.com.
Take as many capsules as you need to get 1000 mg or more total EPA. First, figure out the total EPA in one capsule. For the NSI fish oil, 1 serving (2 capsules) has 800 mg of EPA. That means 1 capsule has 400 mg of EPA. To get 1000 mg or more you would need to take 3 capsules daily of the NSI fish oil.

DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) 400 mg
EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) 800 mg <<<This is the number on the label that you would use to calculate the EPA there is in a single capsule. Divide it by the serving size (2 capsules) and that tells you that there are 400mg of EPA in an individual capsule. To ingest 1000 mg or more you would need to take 3 capsules daily of the NSI fish oil.
Different brands hae different amounts of EPA and different serving sizes.
Read the label.
